All right guys...Jocelyn's take on BOA...
First of all, I'm impressed with the score of 58.3. I mean really, we only scored about 6 points above that at the very end of the season last year. I'm proud of the fact that the band worked hard last week and especially at that incredible silent rehearsal Thursday night.
What I'm not proud of is the first 5 weeks of band where we made virtually no progress because we wouldn't shut up. Wow, what kind of band would we have been if we had practiced all those weeks like we did last week? We could have already had a Division II rating working on a Division I. We have such an incredible show and unlimited potential..but we're letting all our success slip through our fingers with arguing, talking, pettiness, and wasting of sectional time. I mean really, do we not have the maturity to spend 45 minutes one day a week on music and marching? Why in heaven's name are we spraying our hair white in the girls' dressing rooms, not shutting up when the section leader is trying to help you, arguing over hoodie designs (why are you spending your rehearsal time deciding that anyway?), and yelling to go as soon as the clock hits 4:15? (and that's usually when sectionals got started 10 minutes late.) GROW UP. I know a lot of what goes on, and I daresay our directors would be embarrassed if they knew all of it. There's plenty of talent here, we're just not mature enough to develop it fully.
Have you noticed how the drumline practices? It's not like the drumline is just so blessed with incredible musicians that they're so great...believe me..a lot of them can't read music worth a flip and struggled during band camp. But since then I've watched them..they figure out their parts and they can pretty much outplay every band I've seen. Now..if they're not successful because they have more talent..why are they successful? Hmm...interesting. You know how unstoppable our band would be if we all practiced and performed like our percussion? Why not give it a try.
Ok..let's sweep Hartselle away this week. A 58 is a good start..but let's make it to a 75 by Atlanta BOA.
