Black and white and shades of gray

Micheal Phelps smoked some dope. So what? In the scheme of things, is this a story worthy of a headline? With everything going on in South Carolina the attorney general needs to see about charges. Can you say political opportunity, Bueller? Anyone...anyone?

When Michael Vic was caught killing, fighting and possessing a general malaise of cruelty toward dogs, ESPN, Whoopi Goldberg and a large part of the press were lamenting his situation. As if he got caught up in something he couldn't control. Before the ink was dry on the charges against him, Sport Center was wondering how long it would be until he could be back in uniform and making the big bucks again. Excuses were put forth on his behalf and best wishes sent his way.

Just for comparison Micheal Phelps was at a party with friends. Chilling out from being the uber swimmer and athlete du jour and smoked weed. Imagine a 23 year old, at a college, smoking weed. Unprecedented.
Michael Vic, bred and sent dogs to fight and tear each other to shreds for sick sport. He liked to hang the weaker ones to watch them die. He did so for pleasure without regard to the pain of these animals.
Is it a black/ white thing? Is it a swimmer/ football thing?
Are we that backwards still?

I don't get it.
