ESCAPE
Present
Tiffany’s American advancement was nowhere she hoped it would be. It was middling success at best. Who was she kidding? Not herself, that was for sure. Her agent might had been a little too hopeful. The kind of tone you’d knew that you didn’t make it. She recognized it as she had used on bright eyed kids whose dreams were simply to be a singer.
In this current entertainment industry? They simply had zero chance. The cut-throat environment was already saturated as it was. Anyway.. back to her own dilemma. Her bitterness, her pessimistic-self had shown themselves more than she could control.
She was nearing thirty-four. She was becoming a ‘has-been’. A sigh escaped her lips as her index finger touched the rim of her half-empty glass of scotch. She finished her drink in one-go and prepared to leave, but was left transfixed when an attractive woman took the seat next to her.
The woman had these eyes.. the kind that pierced through your soul. Grey and cold looking. Her eyes looked like they were made from ice. The woman turned to look at Tiffany and regarded her slowly from bottom to top.
Hair in the colour of fire. Eyes that were touched by ice. Skin made from snow. The plunging neckline, giving little to the imagination. The corners of her mouth turned up slightly. Her look screamed devil’s temptation.
Tiffany had been in this situation a countless of times. And in a lot of times, she had tried to push this desire away. This need, this want, this unforgiving lust for the same fair sex. Tiffany wanted her, too.
So.
Fuck that. She was going to give in to distract herself from the loneliness she had felt these past few months. She felt trapped in a loop she consistently found herself in. A loop consisting of going out for drinks and fucking people whom she barely knew.
The night went on with how she expected it to go. A stranger in her arms, in between her legs, and so on. However, she found herself crying quietly into her hands after the woman had fallen asleep. She didn't know why she was feeling the way she was.
Life wasn’t cruel to her so far. Men and women were still at her heels. Her loyal fans still tweet at her despite herself not using it 90% of time. She had a manager for those kinds of things. She hadn’t been able to involve herself in the internet world as much as before, ever since she stumbled a forum or websites about..
She couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Whatever.
There was a mini bar in the room. She poured herself a drink and felt the need to leave the bedroom. She sank into the sofa and looked at half-covered woman on the bed. She realized she had never gotten her name. Then she noticed the little flaws slowly uncovering before her. The woman’s nose was a little crooked. Her lips were somewhat thin.
Tiffany shook the thoughts off and drank. Her head titled back, eyes staring at the ceiling. The ruffling of the sheets was heard and the woman before was now leaning against the headboard, staring back at Tiffany.
Tiffany met her gaze. A little unsettled, just like when they first met earlier. The feeling never really went away. For some reason, her heart started to weigh down briefly. Like they reminded Tiffany of something.
Now, the flaws she saw in the woman were now faded. “I didn’t get your name.” Tiffany spoke first.
“Call me S. You?” The woman smiled. Tiffany tried her best to level her gaze with hers, resisting to not look down at her breasts. ‘S’ had not bothered to cover them.
Honestly, why would she?
“Tiffany.”
“Well, Tiffany. Why don’t you get back into this bed?”

Late 2013
From Tiffany: [Can we meet? It’s important. Meet me at Ness’s.]
Tiffany hit ‘send’. Her fresh manicured nails dig into the screen of her phone. She overheard some of the staff’s conversation. All she heard was Jessica’s name, a contract, leaving. Those three keywords were enough to send her worried and anxious. She had some idea on what was going on. But nothing was serious enough. She had doubts. So did her groupmates.
She confided with Taeyeon, but the girl said nothing much. Taeyeon gave that kind of look where she didn’t want to talk about it. Everyone else felt uneased by the confusing situation. But nobody addressed it. Nothing concrete was happening. Yet.
They did not even what to think of it or what to think at all except for the rumors going around. All they felt that something was going to happen. They just didn’t know what.
She knew the girls weren’t too forthcoming with their thoughts on Jessica’s decision to pursue her ambitions this year. But she didn’t think the bottled-up opinions would leave them in a rather sour taste. She had opinions too. Nevertheless, she was supportive of Jessica. Despite what the staffs had said about her in the past few weeks, her belief in Jessica’s commitment to the group never wavered.
At Ness’s café, Tiffany arrived early and waited by the window. The place was quiet and was only opened to people with some status. She waved at her acquaintances. She checked her phone again and there was no reply. Jessica was not big on replies.
About an hour had passed. She was annoyed because of Jessica and the needed resistance in getting another slice of cake. Her phone beeped.
From Jessica: [So sorry. I’ll be there in five.]
Jessica walked in with her sunglasses on. Typical Jessica.
“You’re an hour late.” Tiffany glared at her.
“I had my phone on flight mode.” Jessica gave an apologetic smile. “I went straight from the airport to here.”
What Tiffany got out of that was that Jessica went somewhere overseas without telling her or the others. “You went where?”
“Hong Kong.” Jessica shifted in her seat and took off her sunglasses.
Tiffany eyed her for a moment. “What’s in Hong Kong? Our manager didn’t even know where you went.” She had other questions, but she would settle for two for now.
Jessica’s eyes stared down at the little crumbs on the table. She started small, “I had some businesses to take care of.” Then her eyes met Tiffany’s for assurance.
“I know you when you’re holding something back. Your fingers curl into a ball whenever you do.” Tiffany leaned forward with her elbows on the table. She grabbed Jessica’s hands into hers. “You can tell me.”
“I was meeting up with a lawyer.”
Tiffany let go of Jessica’s hands.

Present
The phone rang, waking Tiffany from an unsatisfying sleep. “Hmm.” She groaned.
“You have an interview in an hour. Where are you? You have to do your hair and make-up in ten minutes.” It was her manager.
“On my way.”
“Your version of ‘on my way’ is way off from its real meaning.”
“Hmmm.” Tiffany just agreed unthinkingly. “I’ll be there.” She ended the call. Five minutes later, she finally got up from the bed, took a shower, put on some concealer on her undereye circles.
She searched for her bag. Instead, she found an unfinished bottle from two nights ago under the bed. She finished the bottle, threw it into the bin, retrieved her bag near the door and left the room. Outside, walking towards the elevator, a familiar voice filled the hallway. The music was playing softly.
Somehow, it struck a chord in her. She paused and tried to focus on the song. But it was finished before she had an idea. This sense of almost-familiarity nagged her throughout the day. What bothered her even more was that her agent made a deal with some media crew that would follow her everyday routine and work-related events.
She found out when the crew arrived at the place of the interview. She needed a drink.
Stretching another hour of smiles and nods and rehearsed lines, the thirst for escapism grew. She pulled out a card from her pocket which was given by ‘S’. The woman had a price. Tiffany didn’t know the woman had been an escort. However, ‘S’ had not asked to be paid. Yet.
‘Yet’ would indicate that there may be a next time after all. Her manager came into the room, signalling it was time for another event that would involve people with connections and money. A charity event, as they say.
“Have you been drinking?” Her manager asked when they were in the car on their way to the prime location.
Tiffany did not answer. Staring out of the window, she began to imagine a life where she would be like any other; average and unimportant. When the thought started to depress her, her throat felt dry. She reached for a bottle of water, but it wasn’t enough to calm her creeping anxiety. The non-stop tapping on the phone screen from her manager entered her ears. She began to tune out and try to quiet the white noise in her head.
She really wanted a drink, still.
Her breath halted for a moment when the melody started to play again. A melody in which she was irritated by the fact that could not remember quite clearly in the beginning. Despite lasting a mere four second, the song was permanently latched into her thoughts. She couldn’t place a finger at what she was missing. Was there someone singing the song? Was it just an instrumental track?
Or was it just a work of a singer she had never heard of before?
Past
Jessica wiped the corner of Tiffany’s mouth with her thumb. Tiffany didn’t know how she started to notice this kind of things. She convinced herself that they shared something more than with other girls. They had this quiet shared understanding of each other. They were opposites, and yet it made them even closer.
Tiffany tried to not think much of it. But the feeling never went away whenever Jessica found herself in the comfort of Tiffany’s company. Especially in the littlest and most intimate moments they shared. Or what Tiffany thought the moment implied or felt like. Before, she reasoned herself that it was probably just an innocent friendship… or whatever you wanted to call it. However, those feelings became more convoluted ever since that incident.
That incident, few days ago
“I think we might do it today.” Tiffany said after pulling Jessica into their room and closing the door. She squeezed Jessica’s fingers.
“Do what?” Jessica titled her head, confused.
“Nichkhun and I decided that we’d..”
“Have sex?” Jessica’s eyes widened a little. Her mouth pulled into a thin line. “Are you sure?”
“I guess. We waited. I know we broke up a few times. But this time, it feels different you know? We’re committed.” Tiffany gleefully smiled.
Jessica nodded as if in support of decision. “Okay. But do it only if you’re comfortable. Don’t do it if you don’t want. You can stop anytime and he has to accept that.” She reminded Tiffany strongly.
“I know.” Tiffany smiled and hugged her like an appreciative sister.
-
Later that night, both were in bed and their backs were facing each other. Tiffany began to imagine what it was going to be like. She had some idea on how it would come to be, but she was still very much inexperienced. She promised to save herself for someone she was sure about. That person was Nichkhun.
But too much imagination made her anxious and nervous. What if she was terrible and did not know what to do? What if it was bad? What if it really hurts? She had been in positions where it could have led to sex but stopped themselves before it could happen. This was different. This was Nichkhun. He was special. Thinking about him, she smiled a little.
“Are you still awake?” Jessica’s voice disturbed Tiffany’s thoughts. “I could hear you thinking loudly.”
“I’m just nervous.”
“How it would feel?”
“No. Not that. The whole thing, I mean. What if I’m.. unsatisfactory?” Tiffany couldn’t find the right words to describe whatever she had doubts about. They both turned to face each other.
Jessica’s hand reached out to lightly squeeze Tiffany’s hand. “You’ll be fine. Just.. stop thinking about it.”
“How did you do it?” Tiffany could see from Jessica’s expression that she was taken aback for a second. Jessica had told Tiffany that she had her first sexual experience when she was in high school.
“We just did.” Jessica said in a small voice. “It came naturally.”
Tiffany asked, “Did you regret it?”
There was a short pause in the air before Jessica answered, “No.” Then the silence fell between them for a moment. Jessica’s eyes trailed along Tiffany’s features. Tiffany saw her looking.
For some reason, she suddenly felt conscious. “Trust me. You’ll know when it comes.” Jessica met Tiffany’s gaze and briefly placed her hand on Tiffany’s cheek to comfort her. There was that silence again. Neither of them wanted to go back to sleep.
But neither of them knew what was going to happen next or expected it.
“Would you show how you would do it?” Tiffany just asked, bit her lower lip down. It was an innocent request for help. She did not think much of it.
Jessica looked incredulously at Tiffany as if the girl had grown another head. But Tiffany pulled that ‘look’ and Jessica rolled her eyes. “Why me?”
“Just pretend you were me or him or just you, for that matter. Maybe I’d be less nervous about it.”
Jessica hesitated for the longest time when she realised Tiffany was serious about it. Both sat up in bed.
“I trust you. We’re best of friends. Friends must have done this before, right? What are you so worried about?”
“Nothing.” Jessica answered abruptly. “This is just unexpected.” She admitted, masking the short shaky tone. Tiffany did not catch it. She laughed in response and poked at Jessica’s shoulder.
Pause.
Neither of them knew when or where to start.
“You’re the expert here.” Tiffany spoke up to clear the air again. Her fingers curled around Jessica’s, her thumb rubbing lightly over Jessica’s knuckles. Jessica laid her hand on Tiffany’s shoulder and guided the girl to lie back down the bed.
She was so careful. Tiffany did not even notice the nervousness seeping from Jessica’s skin. All she felt was excitement and eagerness. Eager to know about Jessica’s point of view.
Jessica positioned herself on Tiffany’s hips. The bed dipped under their weight. “This is where you want to be.” Seeing Tiffany beneath her, Jessica was paralysed for a moment.
“Jessica?” Tiffany touched Jessica’s thigh. And that was enough to send a jolt through Jessica’s body.
“Sorry. I was thinking.” Jessica looked away, not wanting to reveal whatever expression she could not control.
“Look at me.” Tiffany propped her torso up on her elbows. “What’s wrong?” She was confused at the way Jessica was acting.
Jessica finally looked at her. “Foreplay is important.” Her lips reached down to meet Tiffany’s neck. Hot breath leaving traces on her skin. “Find the sensitive spots.” Tiffany’s breath hitched at the contact, her back meeting the bed again.
“And tease.” Jessica left open mouthed kisses along Tiffany’s jaw. “Is this okay?” She paused before nibbling down at Tiffany’s pulse point.
Tiffany did not know what to say at this point. She couldn’t believe how good and how.. right it felt to have Jessica doing whatever she was doing to her. She was confused and excited at the same time. All she muttered was a ‘Yeah.’ Her eyes screwed shut when Jessica’s hand travelled down her chest.
The room suddenly felt hot. It was as if the air had been sucked out. Every touch felt heavy. A level of sensation she had never felt with someone else. This was all Jessica’s doing. Not Nickhun’s.
She couldn’t think. Not when Jessica was pressing down just above where she secretly wanted her to be instead. She moaned in response, unaware of her own wanting. Jessica paused and met Tiffany’s gaze. Her eyes dark, almost unreadable, staring at Tiffany’s lips. She looked for an answer when their eyes met again.
And Tiffany answered without thinking.
