a story within a story
When finding out we were going to be reading the play antigone I immediately pulled out my notes from high school. When I read this in high school I fell in love. In order to really understand this you must first know the story of Edupus rex. From birth he was told that he was going to marry his mother and kill his dad. Well he was sent to the moutain to be killed instead of dying someone took him to a royal family. They named him edups meaning swollen feet. He wert to the oracle again he said the same thing. Determined this would happen he left the house running away. He ended up killing his dad and marrying his mom. Having no knowledge of this he and his mom have four kids two boys and two girls. He didn’t realize til it was too late. He gagged his eyes out and walked around the forest til he died. His kids are cursed for life. The two boys are supposed to share power. Just like anyone they got greedy and went against each other in war. They ended up killing each other. The brother who went against his country was not be buried. Back then they thought if you were not buried you would not go to the underworld. Being his sister antiogne thought it was not right for him to be buried so she went and did it. Causing the problem church vs. state. This is the start of antigone.
