My 20 favorite songs

Nov 10, 2008 22:40

Phil, Catie and Dustin did this and I thought it was neat, so I'm gunna do it. However, some might say I'm cheating... it really should be 15 songs, but I'm bending the rules alittle. I couldn't narrow it down past like 18 or 19 so I decided to make it an even 20. Also, why does it have to 15? Cuz that's Dustin favorite age of girls he likes to date? Wrong... we all know its the magic number 30. Perhaps it's 15 so it can fit on a CD? Well, I'll tell you what, 5 of these songs are over 8 minutes long and 2 of those are above 17 minutes, so this thing wasn't fitting on 1 CD anyways, haha. So whatever. Here it goes.

This will be in alphabetical order by Artist name.

#1 - In Case We Die (parts 1-4) by Architecture in Helsinki
I listened to this whole album (In Case We Die) so much in the months before I left for Australia, so the whole album reminds me of that time period and how exciting it was. However, this song sticks out the most to me for some reason. I guess I really like about half way through the song where it builds up with the military style drums and with the fireworks sound effects. It really gets to me.

#2 - Sleep the Clock Around by Belle and Sebastian
Belle and Sebastian is one of my favorite bands. I think this was the first song or at very least one of the first songs I ever heard by Belle and Sebastian and it is definitely my favorite. It also makes me think of one of the nicest people ever and one of my favorite people, Emily (from Australia/Cole's future wife) because her favorite band is Belle and Sebastian.

#3 - Line of Best Fit by Death Cab for Cutie (the version from "You Can Play These Songs With Chords")
This song is absolutely beautiful. I love the way it just drones on, then builds up, rocks outs, then just slow drones out again. Also, I think the lyrics are just beautiful... "Can't escape this line of best fit." I also love how there's a girl singing backup vocals, which is very rare for a Death Cab song, I guess. I also like this version better (than the one on "Something About Airplanes") because it's alittle more rough and less produced.

#4 - East Hastings by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
I love how this song just builds up to a crescendo. It's just so beautiful, dark and amazing. It also reminds me of "28 Days Later" one of my favorite movies (cuz it's in the movie). This song also reminds me of Tom, cuz his favorite band is GY!BE.

#5 - Two Years This Month (March) by The Good Life
A great ending to one of my favorite albums. It is probably the most perfect ending to an album ever. I love how it begins with clips from all the songs on the record and it's arranged in such a way that it sounds like a new song yet still encompasses the general feel of the album. Also, I love when the music cuts out and just Tim Kasher's vocals come in and the lyrics just pretty much some up the entire album in just a few lines and makes you reflect on the whole album. The song ends and you are just sitting there thinking about the album and how fucking depressing it is. No happy ending and that is just how life is sometimes. I also love the contrast this creates with one of my other all time favorite albums (also by Tim Kasher) "Ugly Organ." That album is also kinda depressing, but then ends on a lighter, well more hopeful, note "The worst is over..." Then you have "Two Years this Month" which offers pretty much no hope just sadness.

#6 "A.M. 180" by Grandaddy
This song has one of the greatest/catchiest keyboard melodies ever. Awesome. Also, the lyrics are really cute.

"We’ll sit for days
And talk about things
Important to us like whatever
We'll defuse bombs
And walk marathons
And take on whatever, together"

I nice little love pop song. Everytime I listen to it just makes me feel happy and think that true love might actually be possible. Then I go watch some porn.

#7 "Row" by Jon Brion
It's a short little instrumental song, but I just think it's really pretty and has alot of emotion it it. It has this weird mixture of happiness and sadness to it that I just find so fascinating and wonderful. It also reminds me of my favorite movie "Eternal Sunshine..." of which this song is from.

#8 "In My Life" by Judy Collins
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Judy Collins voice sounds so pretty. I remember I first heard this on the episode of the Wonder Years where they chop down Harper's Woods and build a mall. It's one of my favorite episodes and the song just fits so well.

#9 "Oh Comely" by Neutral Milk Hotel
This was the first Neutral Milk Hotel song I ever heard. I just think it's really pretty and haunting. I also love how it just goes on forever. This song also reminds me of this girl from the Ozma Forum (AWESOME) who I used to have a HUGE crush on. She was the one who introduced me to Neutral Milk Hotel and told me to listen to this song.

#10 "The Decline" by NoFx
This is one of the most bad ass songs of all time. 18 minutes and 22 seconds of pure non-stop, full throttle glory. The lyrics are also just really awesome. It's just an all around impressive song.

#11 "Battlescars" by Ozma
As all of you know, Ozma is probably my favorite band (granted I dont listen to them as much as I used to, but they will always hold a special place in my heart) and this is the first song I ever heard by them. It's just a really beautiful song and it just fucking rocks at the same time.

#12 "The Poison" by Pedro the Lion
This song has probably my favorite lyric of all time.

"My old man always swore that hell would have no flame
Just a front row seat
To watch your true love pack her things and drive away"

So sad, beautiful and true. I love it.

#13 "Big Trucks" by Pedro the Lion (the version from "The Only Reason I Feel Secure" and the "Big Trucks 7"")
Actually, only up to recently I only thought this version existed and didn't realize that this version was actually the stripped down alternative version, weird. This is the first song I ever heard by Pedro the Lion. It reminds me of Phil and Dustin and how we always yell "Play 'big trucks!' at shows (and the one time we see David Bazan we forget to yell it, haha). It's just a fun, nice song with such interesting/unusual lyrics.

#14 "You Won't Be Seeing Me Again" by Piebald

#15 "Natural Anthem" by The Postal Service

#!6 "I Love LA" by Rilo Kiley

#17 "Rest Of My Life" by Rilo Kiley

#18 "Angel" by Sarah Sarah McLachlan

#19 "Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off To Heaven" by Saves The Day

#20 "N‡ Batterí" by Sigur Rós
