Hamas leaders and supporters in Gaza Strip celebrated Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood presidential victory, according to preliminary results announced on Monday.

The Islamist bloc’s candidate Mohammed Mursi claimed he had won the election over former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq in the early hours of Monday, in line with primary results that were announced later that day.

The Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist organization, guilty of openly backing numerous terrorist attacks in Egypt and abroad, and covertly affiliated with Al Qaeda.

If Mohammed Mursi does manage to become the leader of Egypt, he will almost certainly convert his election victory into a dictatorship, using party militias to silence critics, and either openly repudiate the Camp David Accords with Israel, or routinely violate them by running supplies to Hamas in the Gaza.

Earlier this month, a prominent Egyptian cleric said at a presidential campaign rally that if Mursi were to win, Jerusalem would become the new capital of Egypt.

“Our capital shall not be Cairo, Mecca or Medina. It shall be Jerusalem with God’s will. Our chants shall be: ‘millions of martyrs will march towards Jerusalem’,” Safwat Hagazy said, according to the video aired by Egypt’s religious Annas TV.

“The United States of the Arabs will be restored on the hands of that man [Mursi] and his supporters. The capital of the [Muslim] Caliphate will be Jerusalem with God’s will,” Hegazy said, as the crowds cheered, waving the Egyptian flags along with the flags of the Islamist Hamas group, which rules the Gaza Strip.

“Tomorrow Mursi will liberate Gaza,” the crowds chanted.

If this fairly represents Mursi's objectives, an Egyptian-Israeli war -- and quite possibly the end of modern Egypt as a nation-state (given the existence of the Nasser Self-Doomsday Device)

is probably unavoidable within the next few years.

The only hope of avoiding this would be an Egyptian military coup. The Egyptian military, which is personally familiar with Israeli fighting capabilities, is more than a little less eager to scream and leap upon Israel than are religious fanatics whose knowledge of warfare comes from the Koran and their own hashish-fuelled fantasies.

The silver lining here is that another Egyptian-Israeli war might "draw the poison" -- give the Israelis absolutely no reason not to reoccupy the Sinai and drive the Palestinians out of the Gaza Strip once and for all. But there are obvious dangers that this might become a multi-front war if Syria or Iran got involved, probably leading to a small nuclear conflict in the Mideast. Hopefully and probably, Israel would in that case still be victorious, though of course at a higher human cost both to themselves and to their foes.

Naturally, the MSM is doing its best to ignore such minor issues.
