Well, for one thing, former Major Paddy Roy Bates, now the sovereign of Sealand, had the wit to choose some territory that nobody was using at the time and that he was pretty sure nobody would miss (an old Channel flak fort). He wasn't daft enough to grab a corner of London and try to start his own country there.
Notice also that he and his followers were intelligent enough to bring supplies appropriate to survival on a small artificial island in the North Sea. He didn't just assume that Nature was his friend and then risk death come the first winter storm.
Basically, a group of people colonized an abandoned oceanic fort (buit on a platform kind of like an oil rig) and declared themselves a country. The Powers don't recognize Sealand's independence, but they also have no grudge against it and hence no reason to attack it, so it is de facto independent.
The idea for the personification of Sealand as a cute anime character comes from a 'verse called Axis Powers Hetalia
in which history is redone as the interactions of a bunch of characters all of whom are personified nations. There are a lot of in-jokes for history buffs in the series.
And yes, they parody the World Wars. Among other things.
The problem with keeping your eyes closed tightly shut, Yama, is that you miss a lot of the scenery.
If you were being sarcastic when you expressed surprise at an anime image coming from a chan board, then why do you who hate it so much know so well what's in it?
It's just that, between here and the image boards, you seem to spend an awful long part of your life in places that make you unhappy. You'd think you could find something more fulfilling to do with your life than hanging out with people you hate.
All I can think of is this guy:

It's a painting in the Boston Museum of Art. I'm so surprised.
It's a heavy metal song at a Metallica concert. I'm so surprised.
