U.N. Betrays Women

Apr 30, 2010 05:03

The U.N., in a stirring bid to reduce its respect among the decent nations of the Earth down to zero, has chosen Iran to join its Commission on Women's Rights. No, seriously.

Couresty of FOX News ("U.N. Elects Iran to Commission on Women's Rights," by Joseph Abrams, http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/04/29/elects-iran-commission-womens-rights/?test=latestnews):

Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged "immodest."

... and in which women have been punished at law for being raped. Yes. That Iran.

Iran, along with representatives from 10 other nations, was "elected by acclamation," meaning that no open vote was requested or required by any member states - including the United States.

The U.S. currently holds one of the 45 seats on the body, a position set to expire in 2012. The U.S. Mission to the U.N. did not return requests for comment on whether it actively opposed elevating Iran to the women's commission.

In other words, we didn't. Nor have we protested since then. Nor withdrawn from the commission ourselves. Nor announced that we will ignore its findings. We're going along with this farce.

Well, at least we can finally help do something about those female-immodesty caused earthquakes!

Seriously, is there really any point in keeping the UN any more? It's become an alliance of the evil, corrupt and fascist: almost exactly the opposite of its original intent. It arguably does nothing to preserve the peace, and it lends its approval to some of the nastiest regimes in the world. We'd be better off publicly withdrawing from the organization and forming a new one that explicitly excluded tyrannical states such as Iran.
