Hilarious Self-Censorship by Karen Miller

Apr 02, 2010 11:06

Karen Miller, who to my astonishment I found was actually a published fantasy writer, penned the following astonishing comment, as karenmiller, (http://jaylake.livejournal.com/1692287.html?view=15231359#t15231359) onto lakeshore's journal.

I Can Has Self-Censorship Too? x_eleven April 2 2010, 19:23:24 UTC

... the thing for us non-Furry writers is that Furries don't want us using their stuff. And given that theirs is a living, breathing, current culture, my feeling is that if they say, Hands off please, to not respect that is the height of arrogance. By a very long way we've not always done well by the Furries -- to leave their spiritual and creation beliefs alone is the least we can do. Being a writer doesn't give me carte blanche to take what I like from these people just because there's no law to stop me. And certainly not under the convenient excuse that I'm an artist and all is fair game to me in my exercise of artistic expression. That, to me, is indeed the height of cultural appropriation and unseemly insensitivity and distasteful privilege.

Hands off our culture!

Fact is: I've seen more furbash BS on liberal blogs than I ever saw on conservative ones. Stupid, stupid moonbat.

I have been criticized on liberal blogs for simply being friends with Furries. So I know what you mean.

My suspicion is that liberals are very bigoted, which is why they are so obsessed with making up formal rules against criticizing "disadvantaged" groups, and also why they behave very hatefully toward any Acceptable Targets.

"My suspicion is that liberals are very bigoted..."

It's not a suspicion with me. I know it for a fact. Take a look at this post:

Here's what you need to do, Cloudchaser. Go into a public place with a friend, and just let it out. You want to scream "OBAMA IS A NIGGER" so badly, yet you repress yourself and we have to deal with you. The friend is there to explain to passers-by that it's part of your therapy. Maybe then there will only be a small mob that wants to beat you up.

You get bonus Internet points if you do this, say, in the Watts neighborhood in L.A.

You clearly cannot do subtlety, so just let it out. It's the healthy thing to do.

Here, he's saying that Blacks are savages that can be driven into murderous rages by mere words. I'm sure he'd find a lot of agreement with that premise on the Stormfront forums ( ... )

Not quite a model of a liberated woman.

You need to unpack and explain. Who is "not quite a model of a liberated woman," and why? You've given no reason for your claim.

Hopkins on her feinting couch is not quite a model of a liberated woman, imo.

Sorry if I Replied to a different comment. I'm having trouble navigating here.

omgwtf? For reals? That is so...oh wow. That's just wow. But you're right. it makes sense that the people who keep setting up rules of politeness and propriety and not criticizing the wrong targets would unleashing the hate that they're so obviously penning up against anyone not in their "protected species" category.

Well ... they may have assumed that I was a Furry because of my wolf icon. (Actually, I used the white wolf as my icon because white wolves are special to me). But I think at least one liberal was offended that someone whom he knew to be a Furry was posting comments to my blog ... as if I should ban all Furries. Which implies fairly severe intolerance on said liberal's part.

As a liberal myself, I do admit that lots of my compatriots get very easily offended. I routinely apologize and/or make disclaimers ahead of time whenever I speak about certain subjects or to certain people to avoid charges of bigotry.

Meanwhile, I admit I need to remind myself that not all conservatives are wingnuts, despite what MSNBC says. That is bigotry on my part. I know that most conservatives and most liberals are intelligent people with a good grip on reality. (Congresscritters of any party are exceptions to this rule, of course.)
