Robot Dreams

  • (Not to be confused with the excellent Isaac Asimov short story of the same title!)
I've not encountered Sara Varon's work before, but now I want to.  This graphic novel uses soft, flowing artwork and almost no words to tell the story of a Dog who builds a Robot in hopes of creating a new best friend.

What follows is an perhaps the best exploration of friendship, unfulfilled dreams, love, loss, and letting go in sequential art since Craig Thompson's Goodbye, Chunky Rice.

I know of so many comic artists who fail to make the distinction between helping one discover character traits and showing the reader a check-off list.

Between reporting visuals and using usuals.

Between a natural-seeming, all-encompassing story and just yammering away with illustrations.
