Today concludes my second visit to Jamaica for the year, this time with just my dad. I had a pretty good time and a relaxing week, complete with a trip to Negril.

If you’re ever in Jamaica and have a chance, I highly recommend a day/weekend trip to Negril’s 7-mile beach and to Rick’s Café. The Negril beach offers beautiful, soft sand, a bar every hundred yards, and almost as frequent independent vendors offering a variety of cigars, ganja, and hash. The atmosphere is noticeably different than that of Montego Bay’s Hip Strip… maybe the main difference is just that the Hip Strip is better suited to nightlife while Negril gives the feeling that you could live out on the beach for days at a time. If you’re hungry on Negril’s beach, get a Jamaican meat patty at Niah’s Café… so much better than any others I’ve had (admittedly my only others were at my high school cafeteria, but my dad agrees they’re far better than those served at the Sunset Beach Resort).

A couple miles down the coast from the beach you’ll find Rick’s Café, supposed originator of a few of the world’s Tiki drinks and home to cliff diving (varying height platforms up to 35 feet for tourist, with one much taller jump some local kids jump off of when they get enough tips), and some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets (the cliffs and the beach are pretty close to Jamaica’s westernmost tip).
