It's been more than a week since I posted. I've had bite-sized things to write about, but nothing sustained, so I abstained. (Didja see what I did there with sustained and abstained? :D

As a firefighter I was pretty much duty-bound to watch Rescue Me. Sometimes I had trouble getting past how unrealistic to the business it could be (although it often got the technical details right), but the characters were certainly interesting!
I didn't know you were a firefighter. Man, I'm so grateful for people who do what you do. But mostly, I'm in awe.
I loved Rescue Me. (I should say, I missed the first three seasons; I have to catch up on DVD). It was funnier and more moving than so much else, and I thought it was pretty audacious too (Tommy's conversations with dead people, for instance). Unlike you, I didn't have any inside knowledge to give me a reality check.
But they killed Lou! How could they kill Lou? I know they were setting us up for it, but damn. The last scene, where Tommy talks to dead Lou in his car? Oy. Could not stop crying.
I'm a volunteer; just got my 30 year pin. I'm also safety officer and, until recently when I decided to spend more of my time writing, training officer. My main problem with the show is that firefighters just don't get away with some of the self-destructive crap they were pulling -- or at least, not for long before they either shape up or get kicked out. Just the same, they got a lot of the actual firefighting details right (except for the amount of smoke, but how could they film in zero visibility?) Not to mention it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun if they'd stuck strictly to accuracy.
I'm with you on poor Lou -- he was one of my favorite characters. I have a feeling, though, that he's going to be around for a long time after the final scene; at least, Tommy will think so!

Thanks, Rae. That's exactly what I wondered. I felt that was missing in Mara's performance.

Glad you're having a happy holiday, even if Rescue Me broke your heart a little.

How could I miss replying to this???? Just so you know, I came home with five extra-large all-beef wieners.
