i should have mentioned

although it took me a little bit to make the connection because of my itinerary...

the recent night i was graced by the sight of a meteor burning up in the atmosphere (the 'falling star') was the first night of a 'two night only' theatrical rerelease of a computer-animated film based on the seventh incarnation of the final fantasy video game series. the logo (as seen below) for that instance of the series conspicuously features the depiction of a meteor crashing planet-ward -- a meteor which figures very prominently in the primary story arc of the game. [the game felt no responsibility to adhere to the common nomenclature shift for meteors that hit a planet rather than burning up in the atmosphere, nor did i]

i had originally planned to attend the wednesday showing of the final fantasy film, until i became aware of the documentary film whose screening we attended instead. i didn't sacrifice the former for the latter though because i knew that i could (and eventually would) go to the thursday screening of the final fantasy film.

the theatrical rerelease in japan had occurred some weeks earlier and this release was for the north american market. the showtime was seven pm (eastern) on wednesday. according to reports there were sightings of the meteor falling from canada down through virginia. the sightings all took place in about a fifteen minute window between quarter to seven and seven in the evening. even those outside the sighting area, such as california, might have seen reports of it as it made national news (and was seen in one of the featured videos in the weather channel app).

quite the coincidence.
