Those cats are whores.

So I went to a Cat Cafe today. It seems an absurdly Japanese thing to have, yes? So here's how it works:

you go in, put your personal affects (shoes, dignity, etc) in a locker, and then proceed to wash your hands vigorously for the cats' protection. Then you are allowed entrance to the cat room. In the cat room there is somewhere between 10 and 50 cats- all specially trained to not act like normal cats. They can, for instance, sleep through 5 women petting them simultaneously.

All cats are purebred for some reason. They seemed proud of this.

I was surprised that it didn't smell awful. There were air purifiers and fresheners EVERYWHERE. but it worked.

anyway- I actually started to feel pretty ashamed after a few minutes. It was kind of shocking. These were not cats, they were whores. If you had cat food you could touch them as much as you wanted. If you did not, they would stay away from you.

After a few minutes, I got over the deep feelings of shame, and started to enjoy myself.

Will I go back? probably. It seems too bizarre to NOT show other people.

Also, I had pancakes today. mmmmm pancakes.

Bonus- I have had this conversation several times:
Me: have you been to america?
Japanese person: no. never.
Me: oh, where have you traveled?
JP: I've been to Hawaii 3 times
Me: .... oh really?

There seems to be a mental block that prevents people from really recognizing that Hawaii is part of the states. I would chalk it up to passive aggression- but I don't think the concept really exists here. dunno- any ideas? What should I say in response to this?
