AC: Can't Live Without It

Aug 05, 2010 14:02

I believe our house was constructed in 2006, which would mean that our AC units are only 4 years old. So, they should be young and healthy, right? Not so. Yesterday marked the second time we’ve had to call our reliable and excellent AC repairman* out to our new house this summer. By the time I got home, it was furnace-like upstairs. We have two units, one of which handles the downstairs, and the other of which is responsible for the upstairs. The upstairs one is larger and gets more juice than the downstairs one, but it is the one that can’t seem to handle the work load.

Yes, it has been hot this summer. And yes, the AC units have had to work really, really hard, including quite a bit of night work. And yes, wasps formerly built nests inside the upstairs AC unit. But come on! I want air conditioning that I just have to turn on, and not think about. Why is that so hard to get in the 21st century?

Since it went down later in the day, Sarah told him not to bother coming until this morning, because she also thought it might cool down enough up there by bedtime to be OK. It didn’t. So, we all “camped out” downstairs last night for sleeping. Do we really have three air mattresses? I guess we do. Sarah slept on one in the office, Meggan slept on another in the “dining” room (in quotations because we have not once used it for an actual dinner), under the table, and Hannah slept on hers in the living room. I slept on the couch. We all got a good night’s sleep, I have found out today, except that Meggan got scared at 3 AM, and moved her air mattress right up next to Sarah, lol. How is that girl ever going to be able to live away from her parents?

When I went upstairs this morning to shower, it was still excessively warm up there. I took a cool shower, and felt fine until I got dressed, at which time I started sweating. It has been such a hot summer!

Speaking of the office, Sarah has picked up her diploma from the framer’s, and she hung it on a wall in the office earlier this week. This would be her Emory U. BS degree, which had never been framed until we sprung for it for her last birthday, in May. It and my West Point diploma now hang proudly on adjacent walls.

In other news, our lawn mower died. It was getting old, and I didn’t mind seeing it go, really. A bolt had come out that was for holding the gas tank assembly to the engine, and that messed something up before I realized it was gone. Plus, the whole thing was rusty anyway, and I was tired of pushing it all over our giant lawn. So, Sarah has been shopping online for a good used riding mower. She may be going to get it tomorrow. I’m excited - I’m almost 48 years old and I have never used a riding mower, let alone owned one. I’m thinking that once we get it, we might experience another first in our house: me saying, “Meggan, go mow the lawn.” LOL!
