The Proud Tower, by Barbara W. Tuchman
This is an excellent history book, much like her other output. (I'm fond of The Guns of August, for example.) As the subtitle ("A Portrait of the World Before The War 1890-1914") implies, it's about the now-distant pre-WWI world. There's a lot of selection involved, as she points out in the foreword. The
