1. I'm very fond of inside jokes, especially those found in television shows. Futurama's opening sequence had a couple of items that changed every week for the benefit of observant viewers; The Simpsons has been doing this since the opening was redesigned for high-def. In caps, in italics, and two exclamation points? Is this something that has yet to be edited...? That doesn't make a lot of sense if you're proofreading it, though.

No maybe about it. In fact, I was proofreading a bound copy. This was an after-the-fact job.

I'd guess "purple-mounted" is a deliberate corruption.

As for the missing scene: he holds the gun on the family and says "carry the table into the woods". Then he holds the gun on the daughter and says "tie the other two to the tree". Then he ties her to the table. I guess. That's the best I've got.

Leaving unanswered the question of how the table got from his car to theirs. And I probably should have mentioned that the daughter is five years old. But if the author can't be bothered with details, why should I be?

I think it has to be a deliberate corruption. The words are all adjectives that describe Colbert, so they turned "purple mountains" into the adjective "purple-mounted".

My favorite--though I should note that I don't watch closed-captioning all that often--was at the Oscars several years ago; I think it was when Benicio Del Toro was up for an Oscar for Traffic. They were doing the usual boring red-carpet interview with him, and we had the TV muted because really who cares, when the following came up:

Reporter: Would you like to say something to your family in Puerto Rico?
Del Toro: Sure. [Speaking Puerto Rican]
