Basically, as people who read this know I am a republican . This too me is good news. I would rather have Spectoer say he is a democrat, than never being able to count on his vote. It was clear he is a the "France" of the senate , whatever his allies were for he was against. (the France reference is from a 70's Mad magazine parody)
Even if Toomey runs against him and (probably) looses. If the Senate in 2010 becomes republican controlled, we will see how long it will take for him to change his mind and go back to being a republican. Which is a point that I think few are missing or are greatly concerned about.
All being said , I wish Specter luck and remain unconvinced this is a great filibuster proof senate. I suspect that the republicans just need to pick their fights and make sure they will have people from the democratic party in the senate who will agree with them. I think gridlock has been showed to be what is best for the country legislatively. Because one needs to craft a bill the other party would sign on to.
