One thing I do enjoy about college is how seemingly calm quiet nights can turn into instant weirdness and action.

I was in my bedroom when there was a knock at my door. The following conversation occurred:

Me: (opens door) Hi!
Em: (jumping up and down) THERE'S A MOUSE UNDER THE COUCH HELP MEEEEEE PLEASE!
Me: Oh! I see...I'll just...go get dressed and be right up to help you.
Em: But you look fine! That's a nice dress.
Me: Yes but...
Em: ...
Me: But I'm...not wearing any underwear.
Em: Oh, I see. *weird silence* I'll meet you up there.

So I turn up to our common dining room that Em has set up prettily to accommodate her soon-to-arrive-from-Canberra boyfriend wielding nothing but a broom (and also underwear). It's all I could think of! I planned to redirect the mouse down the stairs and outside. I moved the couches around and lifted all the pillows and checked for holes while Em waited in the next room. I never did see the mouse, so I stayed around and helped Em relax (she was very nervous) and also to make a cheese platter and light candles. She put on a CD called (I kid you not) '60s love songs'. So we danced around to the Beach Boys and Dusty Springfield. Eventually another of our housemates turned up and we talked about spiders and Melbourne and college politics and how weird it was that I didn't drink beer. (I did try some Heineken and it's ok but this doesn't necessarily herald the beginning of my beer drinking days. I'm still thinking it might not ever happen and I shall stick to wine and rum. And never fear, even if I do somehow break my non-beer drinking habit, I'll probably never lose my awkward conversation habit. That one's a keeper, clearly.)

I was supposed to have a quiet night in! Oh, but the world had other plans.
