This extended period between visits to his sons has had a salutary effect on Bing's other friendships, mine included. It's taken me about twenty-five years to get used to the fact that people no longer use their telephones to talk. We use them to communicate; to stay in touch, mostly by email and increasingly by text messaging. The social season got off to a great start rather close to home yesterday: it was Mom's birthday and though it was only her and I at Mommyland, we had a bite of birthday cake and she blew out the two candles I had atop of it.
