REV. KATE RETURNS!

Aug 17, 2014 08:54

I was stumbling around my Facebook page when I came across a message sent from Rev. Kate to her California parishioners. It was a resignation letter. That was news enough. But, the very next line announced her new appointment: St. Michael's. I actually had to read it two or three times to make sure she didn't mean a different St. Michael's; at seven o'clock in the morning, my eyes could easily be playing tricks on me. I examined each word - St - Michael's - Episcopal - Church - in - New - York - City. That was the correct church all right.

The Selection Committee (of which Pale Male was a member) had kept its secret well. For two years, Reverend Kate's name was under serious consideration with what began as a list of over one hundred priests and pastors from around the country. The list had finally been whittled down to three about a month ago. And, no one outside the committee and the Vestry had any idea that Reverend Kate was even interested in returning to the East Coast.

It is no secret that her departure marked the slow decline in my own connection to St. Michael's. Her official duties will begin almost four years to the day since the moment I last saw her:

I'm shocked that entry was made only three and a half years ago. It feels like she has been gonefor at least five years. So much has happened.
