So, I'm not big on sharing poetry. Its kind of personal and I don't like opening up. Still, I was pretty proud of this one. It was an assignment to keep the form of a poem called "An Effort at Speech Between Two People" but put in your own content. Here we go...
An Homage to An Effort of Speech Between Two People
Talk with me. Tell me your story. I will tell you mine.
I will give you a glimpse. A trailer from a movie.
When I was a child, my parents put me on a leash.
A harness to keep me from wandering off
I would talk to people, and I was told it was wrong.
But I still talked, I wanted to share and learn
From others, I knew where wisdom came from.
Love me or leave me. You won’t be the first.
My mind drifts to thriller movies, of people torn
And strong bonds forged in impossible situations
The first girl I loved, that I wanted to love, was scared.
Talk with me. Tell me your story. I will tell you mine.
When I was nine, my sister would dress me up
I wanted to make the world happy
And seeing my family laugh made me happy, too.
I want to know you now. I want
To always be there to listen to your anecdotes.
I am not easy, but I will try.
I have liked pop music and love songs.
There’s been pain in my life. I wonder often
How much more pain there could have been.
Love me, but first love who I have been.
When I was in college, I used to smoke.
I didn’t have the strength to see the top of a building
But I wanted the same result. I wanted the world
To know my name, and then forget me forever.
If it wasn’t for a girl, I’d never end up there
If it wasn’t for another girl, I’d never have stopped.
Neither of them loved me, but I tried to love them first
Maybe I’ve done my whole life backwards
Maybe it’s your turn to show me.
Where are you now? Can I see you from here,
If I stretch my neck and squint a little
Could I see where you are looking from?
I’ve been places, where everyone’s known me
But no one knew who I was
Everyone speaking, not talking… Talk with me. Tell me your story.
