This week was the premere of a new Sci Fi Channel original series Who Wants to be a Superhero?, an endearingly cheesy reality show wherein Stan Lee (creator of Spider Man, The Fantastic Four, and many others) is looking for a new superhero. The superhero hopefuls auditioned in homemade costumes and described their characters and powers. Unlike many other shows of this type, like American Idol, not much time was spent showcasing the painfully bad auditions (I was kinda hoping it would, but oh well). Instead, it jumped right into the heart of the competition, with the 11 finalists.

Their first challenge was to change into their superhero costumes in a public park without being seen and then run to the finish line. They were told that whoever did it the fastest, "In true super-hero fashion" would win the challenge. What they weren't told was that Stan had planted a girl near the finish line, crying that she'd lost her mom. Their real challenge was to help the little girl in need. It was fairly predictable who stopped and who didn't. Most of the women stopped to help her, all but one of the men did not.

I have my favorites picked out already, Major Victory, because he's a complete goof ball and because he was the only male contestant who helped the little girl, and Monkey Woman, who won me over when she monkey-climbed up into a tree to change (I like that she did the challenge very much in character).

One of the coolest aspects of the show was that they would occasionally do a freeze frame in which everything faded into comic-book style graphics. So last night I made myself a Photoshop filter-set that would crudely simulate that effect.

And I decided what superhero I would be if I auditioned for the second season of this show. I would be...

The Swashbuckler
