The sacriligious post

Happy Easter everyone - tonight was Easter Vigil, which means that, regardless of the fact that it's still Saturday - Easter is officially upon us!

In the procession from the school playground to the church itself a conversation started, which reminded me of something that happened in Rome which I still haven't posted about.

Anyway, we have two scenarios centering around church activities, and neither desertrowan nor myself can decide which is the more sacrilegious ... opinions are welcome.

First - at St Peter's in Rome there are a number of memorial/shrine things along the walls which we think are directly above the final resting place of the person below. Anyway, these memorials are great huge sculptures resting atop a glass case in which lies a reclined statue of the dead guy in question in full regalia. In front of these are kneelers which a slot in the top for offerings.
With the first one we saw, the thought that popped immediately to mind was that this was an anima-tronic show a la Disney and that when the fellow put his coin in the box the (doubtless) distinguished pope was going to spring up and start dispensing advice, doing a song and dance ... something! I was actually quite disappointed when all that happened was someone kneeling to pray.

Second - tonight in the highly solemn (ready shuffling and slow) procession from the school yard to the church, lit by candles and done in silence, the thought came that, really, it all reminded one of us of nothing more than a scene from "Shaun of the Dead" Zombies shuffling mindless down the street type of thing.

And now we're watching "28 Days Later"
