Say It in a Mirror with the Lights Off...

Amazing. I believe I'll be getting back $200 from the IRS. This will be the first time in several years I will actually get a refund.

I'm finished with the primary sources for Robert Louis Stevenson, as well as a major biography; a few more secondary sources, and I'll be writing! Stevenson is by far the most sympathetic of all the writers I've been looking at when it comes to the struggles of the Pacific Islanders against disease and colonialism. What is even more amazing is that the first works he read as a young man on the area told him the islands were "peopled with lascivious monkeys"! Yeah, that's a direct quote. But fortunately, Stevenson had a mind of his own, and he actually advocated so strongly for the continued independence of Samoa that the British tried to deport him at one point. He's not perfect, of course, but after the mainly disturbing attitudes of Trollope and London, RLS is a relief...

At school yesterday, I was subbing for a bilingual class, which I always enjoy. The teachers aide was trying to explain to them who the real "Bloody Mary" was, and why they shouldn't act like she is some ghost. So what do the kids do when I take them out to recess? Spend fifteen minutes pretending like they are running from Bloody Mary, of course. I didn't mind, because I like a good scare myself, and at least they were using their imaginations, right?
