Dear old BBC has decided it is going to axe 6Music...my favourite radio station ever.
It makes no sense. 6Music provides what no commercial station could. If the aim of the game is giving commercial propositions more room to operate then you should take aim at Radio 1 (competes with all manner of commercial stations, a lot of them local), Radio 2 (competes with Magic, Absolute and, ahem, Gaydar) or Radio 3 (competes with Classic FM and Smooth FM). Radio 1 would be my choice to go, since it does nothing that commercial radio doesn't already do.
I used to feel that the licence fee was pretty good VFM and I broadly supported it. Now the BBC is no longer going to provide what I tune into most often (and also isn't going to reduce the fee) I feel differently about the licence fee. As long as we're paying the fee, shouldn't we get a say in what gets broadcast? If the answer is "No. Other people will decide for you" then I can't support a licence fee without good accountability.
Also, I bought 2 DAB radios specifically to receive 6Music. Other DAB stations aren't really worth the price of a DAB.
Do you feel the same? What are you going to do about it?
