And yet, somehow, life goes on...

Greetings to all! I hope you enjoyed Shabbos (I sure did).

As you all (probably) know by now, John McCain picked Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate. When I heard about this, it begged 2 main questions: 1) Who? and 2) Why?

I started out being a little skeptical about this, but I've gradually warmed up to this exceptional idea of McCain's. ( Read more... )

Actually, a few people did see this coming. The only one I could remember right now is Ross Douthat at the Atlantic, who I'd recommend you'd read if you seriously want to be a non-WASP Republican under the age of 65 in the 21st Century ( ... )

1) I didn't see the ad, so can't comment. Wouldn't be surprised if they were a bit off-guard, especially considering Barack's historic and moving speech ( ... )

1) It's only historic and moving if he wins the election. Otherwise, who's going to remember what he says? Plus, he didn't get any boost from it according to a new CNN poll (of course that could be because the day after McCain announced that Palin was his running mate, which was also historic ( ... )

7) Considering that she's fought the Repubs in Alaska on other issues, I'm not surprised that some of them are upset at her. Don't you think some Repubs are pissed at McCain too? I will dismiss Lyda Green out of hand because of local politics ( ... )

7) Point taken that lots of Repubs are unhappy with McCain, but not to the point that they say he's not ready to lead. In any case, many are much happier after he changed a number of his positions to placate them. (This is why I can never support him. He is not the McCain of 2000 by a long road. But that's a separate issue ( ... )

7) My point was that even though movement conservatives had and still have doubts about McCain, they have been placated enough not to oppose him. Chose wrong phrase.

8) Corey, if you don't agree with me on the simple definition of a non-political phrase, then maybe we should just stop right now. Otherwise, please grant me thae point that 'gung-ho' and 'excited' in this context meant the same thing!!!

Bad joke that was used to make a serious point about Obama, implying that he's somehow so incompetent that mere button-pushing is a cerebral task for him. If I wanted to, I could joke about McCain's non-experience with anything computer-related. (On that point, I do not trust him to fight against the telcos and cable cos for net neutrality. This is a side issue that he's probably not even aware of that Obama actually has spoken about.)

8) Name the last Dem president who hasn't tried to give away the farm. See how far that policy's gotten us? We have a cold peace with Egypt who let terrorists dig tunnels into Gaza, we have Syria who's convinced that we're going to give up the Golan before negotiations (thank you Warren Christopher for botching that!), we have the Palestinians who no matter what we've given them still refuse to crack down on terrorists within their midst, all the while they still haven't lessened any of their demands since Oslo (I'm exaggerating there, but not by much). You'll forgive me if I don't have any confidence in a Dem president's ability to negotiate peace, much less one whose policy on Israel changes depending on who he's talking to ( ... )
