Let's try something:

Not quite as big as I hoped. Oh, well. A panoramic view of the Singapore skyline. This is one of the oldest parts of the city. Obviously, it's undergone a lot of redevelopment in the last two decades. Much of it, as far as I can tell, was shophouses all over. There's still a few left here and there, either in areas that really aren't worth developing, or refurbished to serve as tourist traps and/or magnets for drunken expatriates after hours.

The cluster of low-rise buildings below the skyscrapers is Chinatown, the historical enclave for Chinese immigrants back in the 19th century. Plenty of historical building, including a mosque and a hindu temple (the building in the lower left of the picture with the courtyard and the tower). Most of the buildings are shophouses. Two or more stories tall, with shop space on the ground floor, and living space above, with a five-foot wide corridor running down the row under the eaves of the upper stories providing access to the shops and shade for pedestrians at the same time.

That's all for now, I suppose. Close-up pics of Chinatown itself to come in the next post.
