I was just wasting time online before my hubby woke up and I decided to start looking at prices for a bath book for Amy's baths. On Amazon I happened onto a bath book of The Rainbow Fish that had a low rating. I went to read the reviews thinking the book falls apart easily or something. No, the reason the book had such a low rating? A handful of people rated it with one to three stars because of the supposedly disturbing messages in the book. One, it's a KIDS book!!! It's a STORY!! Kids don't read messages, so why should we? The predominate belief was it was some Socialist commentary because the fish gives of his "wealth", his scales, to everyone else. It's SHARING, not COMMUNISM!!! There was another that was saying it taught kids that they had to give stuff away to get friends. If any symbolism was apparent, it was the scales being given symbolizing the fish's willingness to play/share with the other fish. This is the storyline--the fish that was selfish at the start of the story shared at the end. People need to stop reading too deep into things.
