In which I start a computing adventure

So my most recent adventure (that scarily had to coincide with the great condo selling buying adventure of 2012/2013) was getting a new computer before my old one dies. It's been in bad shape, especially since it's total upset a few months ago when I had to disable all many of the services and such running to even be able to get in without using ( Read more... )

I had a PC die this past summer. I used it almost exclusively for a few music applications that didn't have Mac equivalents. By using VirtualBox (free) to create a Windows environment on my Mac, I was able either to migrate or emulate everything I needed.

(I have a simple external USB drive dedicated to "Time Machine" -- plus a D-Link router -- rather than a Time Capsule, so I don't have any specific insights into that device.)

Luckily it's been dying a slow death so I was able to get all the stuff I wanted onto a flash drive and it's now on the new one. The network is just icing and allows me to use files that might open better in their native environment and be edited with possibly proprietary programs. But I am keeping ideas for windows environments on the Mac in mind so thanks for the idea! And I did get Time Capsule working (kinda - weird glitch this morning but it went back to working fine) so that's all good :).

Don't know anything about the time capsule, but if it's setting up an ad-hoc network rather than a managed one, you may have to tell your PC that. I find that things usually work more smoothly if there's a regular wireless access point in the network.

I'm not quite sure what was going on but there is the chance that the network was there all along and I was just looking wrong *face palm*. The printer sharing, on the other hand was far more of a challenge to figure out but one of the things I did worked so I'm not trying to over think it now that it's okay ;). I will keep what you said in mind though, for future issues that may come up!! Thanks!
