I was reminded today (via the Detroit News coverage of Veteran's Day in the US) that the first November 11, the day the war ended, was a day of celebration.

We're so used to solemnity for this day. In Britain, I think they still do a moment of silence. Most people wear poppies to support the work of the British Legion.
