Ever since May rolled on by, I've been slumming it.
No writing, no reading, no constructive activity or accomplishment to speak of.
I keep saying I need to get myself into gear, but it's 15 days into the month now, and I'm still coasting. What happened to my drive? My focus? Hmmm...
Friday I attended a fund-raiser carnival: food, heat, people, and heat. Did I mention it was hot? We (my family and the SO) had to seek refuge in my dad's office from time to time -- Thank God -- but I can't imagine what it's like of the people down in the open. I only needed to walk from one area to another and I'd be sweating again. Ick. Other than the overly priced food, I bought a reasonably priced dress, belt and a pair of sandles from the jumble sale. Then I came home, fell asleep, and ... I think we went to a little Italian restuarant and Starbucks that evening! Did I write? .. No. I watched an episode of House and a few episodes of The Unit. Who knew I'd actually like watching a show about covert ops?
Saturday and Sunday was part 1 and part 2 a Firefly-marathon at my bf's home. Literally. I'd arrive, we'd eat, and then we watched one episode after the next until it was time to eat again. Despite my brains feeling as if they were oozing out of my ears at the end of the weekend, I liked it. Both Firefly and Serenity. I've been aware of the fan-base, the mess between FOX and Whedon, and the cancellation, but for some reason, I was only mildly interested in watching. I guess I was a bit put off by the SF premise -- it reminded me of another SF show... what was it? Ah, Andromeda. And I wasn't really impressed or interested in that. But .. this was Joss Whedon! *slaps head* It was only a matter of time, I knew... and then the SO got a hold of Serenity, liked it, shared it with me, and I told him to get a hold of Firefly. *winks* And ..so that's how we ended up veggie-tating our brains of the wonders of Whedon.
Funny experience: It took me nearly up to episode five before I get curious enough about the non-English being spoken in the episodes. How cool, I thought, did Whedon make up his own futuristic language for this 'verse? And just as neat, it sounded a little oriental/Asian! .. Perhaps he merged some Chinese, Japaneses, etc together... I literally hooted when I found out the gibberish the actors were saying was supposed to be Mandarin. That doesn't sound like any Mandarin I've heard! *chortles* Funnily enough, it further endeared the characters/actor to me.
And yeah, I actually ended up liking Firefly more based on information gleaned from the 'net. Stuff like how Whedon wanted it to to be a you-are-there feeling, so the camera movements are sort of gritty; how his ships don't travel a light-speed; how there aren't aliens; how the history of Earth led to Chinese and English being mingled together in common speech; etc. Lot of the stuff I didn't consciously realize while watching, but they did make me go "Huh.. that's right."
I enjoyed the dialogue, the punch-y interchanges, the characters we where just getting glimpses of, and the meld of humor as well as honest seriousness. It's a real, real shame that it got cancelled so early. And while I'm glad a movie was made with some closure, it could have been so much more. Ah well.
