This Post involves:
--The best overtime pay I have ever made
--and Movies Rock
--The Kite Runner
--Juno
--Atonement
Let's just do this day by day, blow by blow.
SUNDAY:
Was actually a day were leading up to i was kind of freaking out about the event. At Conde Nast LA they asked the us (the Advertising Assistants) if we'd volunteer to help take care of VVIP clients for the Movies Rock event. I had NO idea what this would involve, and the the jerks at Conde Nasty New York made it sound like it was going to be a blood bath and that our clients were going to be a handful.
It COULDN'T HAVE been farther from the truth! My client was from Anhueser Busch and he and his wife were totally awesome. All I really had to do was ride with them from their hotel in the town car, walk them down the red (er-uhm, green) carpet (DARN!). Take them to there seats, watch the show (double DARN!), escort them back to the town car, escort them into the after party, and make sore they have a good time. The show (MOVIES ROCK, airing tomorrow night on CBS) was a BLAST, and y'all should watch it. It was like an Awards show without the awards and some very cool musical numbers. All songs were CLASSIC movie songs, ranging from "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to "As time goes by" to "Big Spender". Though many of the artists aren't my most favorite (Beyonce, Fergie, Mary J. Blige, John Legand, will.i.am, etc), it was still fun. I had more of a backstage perspective, kindof, as we were using the main stage hall where I saw Harrison Ford, (a VERY PREGNANT) Jennifer Lopez, TONY BENNETT!, Fergie and Josh Duhammel, Danny DeVito (yes he's shorter than you think), etc etc..
Then at the EVEN MORE awesome After party, I was surprised I had fun. Usually it's more fun thinking about it before hand than the actual event itself, because Hollywood people aren't always THAT fun, and certainly rarely the life of the party, oddly enough. But this party was actually like a wedding. And I felt comfortable for a change because I actually knew other people there. Didn't feel like I was hugging the wall staring at everyone. A great night and the best 10.5 hours of overtime I ever made. FOR SURE!
MONDAY: Saw "The Kite Runner". For all the cynics out there, it's okay for movies to be emotional. And there is a huge difference between emotional and sentimental, especially when you have an excellent story. For those who love the book, yes as a movie there are things missing, but it is a VERY faithful adaptation of the book, and it hit me in all the same spots it did when I read it. And I loved that they pulled off filming a movie from a book written in the first person without using the ever dreaded VOICE OVER. It was an excellent and worthy adaptation.
TUESDAY: Saw "Juno". Go see it! What's funny is at first it comes across as ANOTHER brainy, witty, precocious, teenager-with-far-too-large-of-a- vocabulary-for-her-own-good story (I've never met such a teenager). Yet it was so good. Instead of being overly cynical and self-righteous/conscious it had a heart of gold. And the performances of the entire cast were stellar. And surprising my favs were Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner. They played against their normal type (more so for Bateman). It's gonna be a minor hit, not to mention has an encyclopedia of quotable lines. Oh, yeah, it was a Q&A with cast and filmmakers. I want to pick Diablo Cody's (screenwriter) brain. The movie was smart, and she was smart to listen to talk.
WEDNESDAY: And THAN "Atonement"! GAH! My brain can't process all these great movies coming out, and I haven't even seen "Sweeney Todd" yet, which I'm DYING to see. Wow, what can I say. Yes, it really is that good. Yes it's about British aristocrats. Yes it feels like a Jane Austen novel. Yes it feels like Gone With The Wind (in a way). Yes it feels like The Piano, and Remains of the Day and Howards End. But the kicker is it's Modern Touch. Joe Wright is a filmmaker for the ages. If he doesn't win an Academy Award for this (and it is a TOUGH year for the director category) he SURELY will very soon. This guy LOVES everything (the entire package) of a film and it's story. There will be people who poo-poo it because they can't stand romance, but it has arguably one of the HOTTEST sex scenes ever, and no clothes came off!!! That's how films should be made. And Joe Wright loves his story, loves his characters, loves his cast and loves his crew. Oh yeah, i guess I forgot to mention this was Another Q&A! James MacAvoy said that the set environment was magical with everyone (CAST and CREW) not only having fun, but loving being apart of it. And it shows in the movie. Cheers to that! Also, Vanessa Redgrave was there and we gave her a standing ovation. Not necessarily for the movie, though she's brilliant she's only in it for 5 minutes, it was more that it was effing Vanessa Redgrave. An ovation for her career. It was awesome.
Anyway, the past week's excitement in a nut-shell.
Next week i have to MISS Sweeney Todd with Tim Burton, because I have to work an event! I'd say Bah Humbug, but the next night is "Charlie Wilson's War" with Aaron Sorkin!
