The Pledge: The magician shows you something ordinary.
The Turn: The magician takes that ordinary thing and makes it do something extraordinary.
The Prestige: Then bring the horror/excitement back home.
The three parts of a magic trick are much like the standard analysis of dramatic structure of Gustav Freytag except the rising and falling action were left out: The exposition (The Pledge), climax (The Turn), and the dénouement (The Prestige). The film does a wonderful job with this idea and dangles the concept in front of the audience in a clever way, but I don’t see much beyond that.
Still a great movie.
