As the sun was coming up, Sam packed up their gear. He had to smile at the sight of Kassandra’ head on Dean’s shoulder. Kassandra stirred when she became vaguely aware of car keys and the door closing. She gently kissed his forehead, causing a soft moan to come from Dean’s lips. His eyes slowly came open.
“Good morning,” Kassandra said softly.
“Hi.” He smiled down at her. “Sleep okay?”
“Not too bad.” It was a fib. “You?”
Dean was still studying her face. “About as much as I normally do at the end of a job,” he said vaguely. He closed his eyes as he pressed a kiss to her, breathing her in , thankful that she wasn’t injured more seriously.
“Penny for your thoughts?”
“No mind reading this time?”
“I could...but I’d like it better if you just said.” Kassandra’s fingers gently traced Dean’s jaw. “Please?” She felt him shiver under her hand.
Then she gasped, startled when he hugged her.
“Not too hard..” she said softly, feeling him loosen his grip, alarmed that he was hurting her.
“You don’t have to let go...just not so hard...”
“Kass…”
“Spill, Winchester...”
“You know I’ll never let anything happen to you, right?” Dean whispered in her ear.
“I know that, Dean.”
“Good..” his body relaxed a little. “I just…”
“Just what?” she asked in the same soft voice.
They heard a key in the lock then, announcing Sam’s return with their breakfast.
Kassandra called dibs on the shower as Sam put the food down on the table. “You guys go ahead.”
She turned on the shower, trying to avoid hitting her stitches. She cried out in pain when the hot water still managed to hit the back of her head and then she had to balance herself against the wall as she was hit by a wave of dizziness.
Sam had heard her cry out and was now knocking on the door.
“Kass? You okay?” he called through the door.
Between the water & the pain, Kassandra didn’t hear. Hearing the thud, both boys dropped their food and entered the bathroom. Dean turned off the water taps while Sam wrapped a towel around an unconscious Kassandra.
“Kass…honey, wake up,” Dean pleaded as Sam put her down on the bed once again. He stroked her face as Sam looked on anxiously.
They both breathed a sigh of relief when they saw her eyelids flutter open. “Hey…Kass.”
“Wha…what happened?”
“You fainted in the shower.” This from Dean.
“’xplains why I only have a towel.” A wince. “My meds still on the table?”
“Relax...I’ll get them.” Dean got a glass of water and two pills. He sat on the edge of the bed, handing the pills and water to her.
Sam waited until she was done to pass her her green tea and breakfast sandwich. She had to eat slowly, but she was able to finish the whole thing.
With Dean’s help, she got back up again.
“Sorry, guys…two more seconds for me to get dressed and then the bathroom are all yours. Promise.”

The boys had the car packed when Kassandra had dressed and tied her brown hair into a ponytail. They were puzzled/curious when they saw the second car. A blue Corvette-with a red headed girl in the driver seat- pull up. And Kassandra was walking toward THAT car instead of the Impala.
“What the…Kass, where are you going?” Dean demanded.
The car trunk opened & Kassandra handed off her bag to the driver. “I’ll give you a minute.”
“Thanks..” She turned back to the boys. “I’m not going back to Bobby’s with you.”
“Why? Did we do something wrong?” Sam asked.
“No, of course not. It’s just time.”
Dean had a bad feeling in his gut. He took Kassandra by the elbow and led her out of Sam’s earshot.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his green eyes studying her for any sign that she was in trouble. He didn’t feel comforted when she buried her face in his shirt.
“I’m not leaving you. I’m leaving hunting. It’s just time for me to try to do something else.”
Slowly she felt Dean’s arms go around her as he realized that he couldn’t begrudge her for wanting to have a normal life. He raised her chin so he could look in her eyes. Then his lips brushed hers.
A single tear fell down her face as she kissed him back and held him close for a moment longer.
“You’ll still be able to find me here in Portland. I’m staying with my friend Deena. She’s the driver.”
Dean looked back , giving Deena an appreciative once over as he took in her long legs.
“Always were a legs man..weren’t you?” Kassanddra said affectionately. She touched Dean’s cheek one more time before starting back to here friend.
“Hey, Kass?”
“Yeah?”
“Can you promise me something?”
“Anything.”
“Stay safe. Please.” The last bit was whispered huskily.
It was Kassandra this time that kissed Dean first, soft, sweet, lingering. Her hands went up into his darnk blonde hair. “I promise,” she whispered in his ear. “I promise. I”ll be safe.”
Sam and Deena watched the two of them come back. Sam noticed that his brother was holding Kassandra’s hand.
Sam gave his brother a questioning look to which Dean half-shrugged. So he turned to Kassandra. “What’s going on, Kass?”
“I think it’s time for me to try something else. I was just telling your brother that I’m going to be staying here in Portland, so you know where I am.”
She raised her arms, wanting a good-bye hug, which Sam obliged readily.
“I’m going to be fine. So are you,” was the last thing she said to them before she was finally ready to go.
As the girls were driving away, the boys noticed in the rear-view mirror, tears were beginning to fall down Kassandra’s face.
