"Lost and Found" part 5

As it turned out, Kassandra *did* require four stitches for a gash in the back of her head. Dean and Sam came to check on her after they called Bobby to tell him they had found and rescued about a dozen girls, and they had managed to kill one of the dragons but, unfortunately, one had escaped.

“We had to take Kassandra to get stitches,” Dean told him, “but she’s going to be okay. We’re probably going to have to stay here one more night. You know, just to keep an eye on her.”

There was a momentary pause as Bobby took this all in.

“Are you looking after your brother?” Bobby asked with a slight undertone of gruffness.

“You know I am, Bobby.”

“Has she caught on to you yet?”

Dean still had no idea that his little brother had talked to Castiel, so he said,” I’ve got everything under control here.”

Bobby humfed and hung up again, leaving a dial tone in Dean’s ear.

“Bobby hang up on you again?” Sam asked, bemused.

“Like I said, ninety percent liquor..”

The doctor was just giving Kassandra a prescription for a strong painkiller that reaquired her not driving.

“That won’t be an issue. My friend does most of the driving.”

Sam helped her down from the examination table. When they got into the hall, Penny and her sister called to them.

“We just wanted to thank you,” her sister said.

“It’s what we do,” said Dean, making Sam bite his lip against the tease that was on the tip of his tongue.

“Drive safe,” Sam smiled.

She held on to Sam’s arm as they walked out the front door to the Impala. The moment they walked back to the hotel room, Sam helped her into his bed.

“I’ll take the pull out couch tonight and get the matching dents,” Sam offered her with a downscaled version of her smile, as he tucked the covers around her waist.

Dean took the prescription from the nightstand by her bed.

“Get some rest,” Dean pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Sam will get you what you need.” Dean glanced in his brother’s direction. Sam nodded.

“I’ll try to be back as soon as I can,” were Dean’s parting words before he left again.

Kassandra winced as she tried to fluff the pillows behind her head.

“Here, let me help you with that.” Sam gently sat her up and fluffed the pillows for her. His forehead creased with concern.

“I’m fine, Sam. I’m just going to take a nap until Dean gets back.” Kassandra managed a smile at Sam.

“You’ll be okay if I take a shower?”

Kassandra kissed his cheek before she closed her eyes.

It was beginning to get dark when she heard the soft hum of the TV, and felt the weight of one of the boys on the edge of her bed, Dean as it turned out.

It was the local news, and the parents whose daughters had been hospitalized were telling the reporters about the three FBI agents who had saved their lives. She felt her body tense as it always did, waiting for pictures to be shown...but none were.

Dean felt here stir as she sat up to take her medication. “I’ll get you some water.”

“Thanks.”

Realizing that Kassandra was awake, Sam got up to get her something to eat. He came back with warmed up chilli and noodles. He was carrying a juice and a bottled water. “I wasn’t sure which one you wanted,” he admitted.

“That’s very sweet. Thank you, Sam.” Kassandra took the glass of water from Dean and palmed two pills, swallowing them and washing them down with water.

Under the boys’ watchful eye, Kassandra managed to eat half of the food in front of her. Both boys were clearly worried.

“Check in with Bobby?” Kassandra put her plate on the stand.

At first neither brother answered. She sighed. “Guys, my appetites going to come back. It’s a temporary thing. K?”

Sam half-shrugged in a ‘whatever you say’ fashion. Dean didn’t look so sure. “Now...have we heard anything on Bobby’s end about what could be going on?” Kassandra took a drink of orange juice.

“He said he might have something for us when we got back,” Sam said.

“Maybe you two should rest then.” She was looking mostly at Dean when she said it.

“I’d feel a lot better if you’d let me stay with you.”

Sam kept quiet, not wanting to add to Dean’s worry. “I can take a shift too.”

“I got it, Sammy.”

“Well, if you change your mind..”

“I’ll let you know.”

“Goodnight, Sam. Sleep well.”
