MFA Day

This afternoon I went to the MFA with Adam. Well the reality was I had to go for my history class & I got Adam to come with me because he likes it there & always has stories about girls he meets there. First we looked the Nubian, Egypt, & India exhibits, & I saw all of the stuff I had to for class. Then we took a few minutes & stared at this amazingly realistic painting by William Michael Harnett. This guy painted a whole collection violins and bugles & such. I made a musicians’ joke that the treble clef on the sheet music needed some work. You see very few people draw their treble clefs near the engraved form so the joke is that this guy made this breathtakingly real painting but he still can’t get the treble clef right. Anyway this girl comes out of nowhere & starts examining the clef & says something along the lines of, “it doesn’t look that bad to me.” I think she thought I was really absorbed in my treble clef drawing abilities or something. It was all I could do to keep from laughing to smile & say, “I wasn’t really being that serious.” Later Adam turned to me & said, "some people just have no sense of humor." We both agreed that that girl sucked.

Lastly we walked into a touring gallery of the art of Damien Hirst. It included a lot of crazy things. Well let me start by saying there’s a lot of modern art that I just don’t get. But I love this guy because, although it may not take very much skill to create it, there’s something very individual about the sadistic mind behind the work he does. His most notable pieces on display were:

A glass case filled with live butterflies swarming around a life size animatronic man looking through a microscope

A beautiful mosaic which, at a closer glance, turned out to be made entirely of real butterfly wings

A glass case containing a dead sheep preserved in formaldehyde
It was supposed to represent Christ or something. I didn’t really get that part.

& finally there was this big black rectangle hanging on the wall that looked like a black bear rug or something. It turned out to be “flies & resin on canvas” It was really gross! Just out there, it wasn’t behind glass or anything. I love it! We left after that one.
