I love the ability to get books sent to my local branch. It's just so convenient!
This is what I've been reading, with some comments on them:
Rawlinson, George: The story of Parthia
Colledge, Malcolm A.: The Parthians
Rawlinson is too old for me to read without damaging it, so it's going back to the library with an appropriate comment to the librarian about it. Colledge is a very high level overview. It didn't have the details that I was looking for. Does anyone have a recommendation for Parthia? I do not have a good source for them currently and I'm actively looking.
Hornblower, Simon.: The Greek world, 479-323 BC
Shipley, Graham.: The Greek world after Alexander, 323-30 B.C
These are both from the Routledge History of the Ancient World series. They are also both quite good. I haven't finished them, but I wound up with references to other books that I want to get. I'll post about the new books when I get them from the library.
Laistner, M. L. W.: A history of the Greek world, from 479 to 323
This is also a solid book. It is more focused on Greece proper while Hornblower goes into more detail about the various colonies. Laistner also focuses more on Sparta than Hornblower does. In short, the two complement each other nicely. The downside of Laistner is that it was written in 1976 but Hornblower was revised in 2002 to reflect modern research.
