I had to watch 'the medicated child' today in health ed and there was a kid whose 'mommy and me' (Pre-preschool) teacher told the parents to put him on adhd medication. The kid was 4. So they did, and then he was diagnosed with childhood bipolar disorder (because he had mood swings apparently) and was put on anti-psychotics and mood stabilizers. He was 7. By the time he was 9 he had developed a head rolling tic, caused by medication alone. He was on 8 different medications by this point.
it just makes me really glad that my parents stopped giving ritalin to my brother when they saw that it made him lose his appetite, his energy, and his personality. the teachers at his school insisted on it and yelled at my mom about it but she stood her ground and for that i have to respect her.
some parents think that just because their kid throws tantrums sometimes they need to be put on zolaft or something, but maybe mom and dad are just shitty parents.
that kid was so fucked up he could hardly contribute to a conversation. and that was apparently better than who he would be otherwise? i know that with shows like that they find the worst cases they can, but still.
when i'm a teacher i will never tell parents to medicate their children. I will tell them if I think there is a legitimate problem and tell them that they have options, but I'll always be willing to put a little more effort into him during class if it's between that or screwing up a kid's life.
