yww day ten: celebrate good times, come on!

The Celebration today went really well, and was a nice cap on the workshop. Our guest speaker was Mike Artell, an author and cartoonist from New Orleans who talked about perception and humor, and read a bit from his picture book Petite Rouge. Then the kiddies read from science fiction, fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and playwriting. Most read well, some mumbled and held their papers in front of their mouths so that not even the people in the front row could hear. The three kids from my classes who read did a good job. I got roped into one of the skits, playing a stern college dean. The illustration awards were given out to the winners who got on the front and back covers of the anthology. Anthologies were given out. I talked to a few of the parents, and several of the kids asked if I'd be teaching again next year.

Overall, this was a much better teaching experience than last year. Even if some of the kids were rowdy, they were all enthusiastic about the work they were producing, and their energy brought about some really great discussions about writing. There were days I was drained afterward, but I was always eager the next morning to see what they would come up with. And it was so great to see some genuine talent in the two groups.

So will I be teaching at the Young Writers' Workshop again next year? Hell yeah.
