Firstly, it's a US statistic. You are American so that is relevant to you and your parents. However, the divorce rates in Australia and the UK are much lower, around 30%. Yet most Britons and Australians believe the 50% statistic even though it is not true in their countries.
I think the reason for the difference is that people in Australia and Britain are much more likely to live together without getting married, and get married later in life only when they are very sure.
Secondly, the statistic is altered by serial marriers - people who have two, three, four or even five marriages. The rate of divorces among people on their first marriage is much lower than 50%. People who are on their second marriage are statistically more likely to get divorced than people on their first marriage.
And finally, divorces peaked for the Baby Boomer generation but Gen X seems to be doing a better job of keeping relationships together. So the statistic could drop in future, rather than rise.
Still, congratulations to your parents - and I'm sure you can Janet can look forward to as many years together.
