I just finished purchasing plane tickets for Singapore; Janet and I will be going at the end of June and staying for a little over two weeks. We'll get to see even more of the country and spend some time with her family. I'll also get some first-hand research done for the Tower novel. I can't wait ( Read more... )

A novel set that needs visiting Singapore for research, eh? Do tell?

I'd actually rather keep that under my hat for now, at least until after I've finished a rough draft. But as soon as I'm done, no worries, I'll be blabbing all about it.

If you set fiction in Singapore and don't totally diss the place, you may become a celebrity there. There's precious little notable fiction coming out of the place. Not that there aren't good local authors, but the mostly don't get heard about.

Well, I will say that my fictional setting is loosely based on Singapore, but it's also based on Hong Kong and Taiwan. I'm really interested in the island/mainland relationship. Though I know more about Singapore's history and geography and politics than the other two, so it'll be weighted a little more that way.

Looks like a lot of fun! Hopefully I will run into you and Janet at Wiscon. Make sure you post your schedule, and I'll definitely check out the art show.

You're actually going to Des Moines. I'll miss you by a few days- I get back for vacation on 4 Aug- or else I would have stopped by to say hello. Enjoy your travels.

I sure hope so. I don't want to be stuck in Iraq forever.
