This week I became a member of the "My Computer Crashed" club. Not at home, thankfully, but at work. The old POS finally gave up the ghost. Not all at once, mind you, it took two days. My anti virus software stopped it's normally scheduled 8:45 a.m. scans mid-week last week then on Monday when I booted up I got the error message NORTON ANTIVIRUS FAILED TO LOAD. By the end of the day Monday I couldn't get the thing to stay booted up more than 5 seconds before it went into continuous, perpetual re-booting mode. Chris, a tech in the computer center, came to the rescue but, in the end, he could only log in in safe mode as an administrator and stay in long enough to burn pertinent data to CD's before he began the real work. I know what you're thinking. Doesn't she back-up? Yes . . . and no. The work data is, theoretically, backed up onto our server at least once a week but the other, more important, PERSONAL items were not. Luckily I managed to salvage everything I needed, wanted, and desired to keep before Chris disappeared with my CPU. He gave me a "loaner" until I got word today that he would, indeed, have to scrub my hard drive. That's gonna hurt. Our computer center no longer supports Word Perfect (Yes, that's how old this thing is!) and once he scrubs and re-applies all my software I will not get my beloved WP back! A moment of silence please . . .
