Funeral Rites

Nov 19, 2005 21:28

The crystal casket of Queen Mera makes its way down the streets. Grown men are seen collapsing to their knees and rending their clothes in grief. Women wail and children are silent. In the turbulent waters of Atlantis, there seems to be a unity only in grief.

Mera was a beloved symbol and leader. In calmer days, she ruled at the side of King Arthur, and the Undersea Kingdom was a paradise to behold. Musicians strum their lyres and sing their laments with such sweetness that even the Whales stop to listen. Sobs and shudders add an eerie accompaniment.

The Queen is dead, the Council in shambles. Perhaps, the unity in the citizens found in this time of woe will begin to heal wounds already inflamed.

But as they place her body in the temple of Posideon for its final rites, and Kostan is returning to the palace with the rest of the council, the hope for unity proves a futile one. No sooner is Mera's coffin out of sight does the quarreling start anew, with even greater rancor.

"A surface man caused her death! I say we destroy them all! Let them taste our grief."
"If Sub Diego had been taken under our protection, then she would be alive!"
"Let us cut our losses and be done with this foolishness!"
"Silence, and show some respect!"

Somewhere in the crowd, a fist comes for a face.

And the fall of Atlantis begins.
