Bleak Out

Feb 15, 2010 21:22

Dancing red-and-blue lights lit up the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel, a well manned police barricade blocking the entrance.  In fact, all traffic across the Hudson and East Rivers was suspended, leaving Manhattan in a state mandated quarantine.  High powered flood lights pointed from several angles into the city,  but none broke the eerily impervious night.  Several news vans hummed with electronic equipment, satellites affixed to their roofs, as reporters clamored for the best angles.

One woman dressed in a gray skirt-suit, her dull brown hair flat-ironed into a stiff submission, queued herself up, and began, "The scene outside New York City's most famous borough tonight is an unsettling one.  Around eight-o-clock this evening, what was believed to be a severe power outage swept across the island of Manhattan.  However, it quickly became clear, this was no normal outage.  Officials are being tight-lipped as yet to announce any speculative cause, but sources say terrorism hasn't been ruled out.  One things for certain, however.  The situation here is certainly terrifying.  This is Mindy Cartwright reporting, Action News 8, WKYB-Cincinnati."

As Mindy moved into the van to review her tape, the cameraman began securing establishing shots.  Over the Hudson, a normally sparkling metropolitan jewel sat dim, a conical dome of darkness extending into the night sky.
