Cassie Sandsmark paces around her living room, nervous. She’s got her latest History paper clutched in her hand, with a broad A+ written across the top, and she’s practicing her best Mommy-I-love-you smile. The last time she’d had one of those plastered on her face, she’d asked her mom to let her get her belly button pierced. That time, she’d been ( Read more... )

She examines her daughter for a long time before responding. "Okay. Sold. I have some 'lose it or use it,' time at work." A beat. "So what do you know about his parents?"

She wants to scream with joy, but she doesn't. Not yet. There's still a detail or two that her mom doesn't know. Like the following.

"Well...they aren't actually his parents. More his guardians. Kon's, a, umm...clone. Of Superman. So, he's, like, living with these people on a farm. It's not as Little House as I'm making it sound, really. Their names are Jonathan and Martha. They're good, old school people."

"A...clone...of Superman? How does this -" She waves her hands and head. "Wair. Stop. Rephrasing. So he was created as opposed to born to someone, Kryptonian or human?"

There's that sheepish smile again.

"Remember when Superman sort of died a few years ago? Around that time, people started creating Kon to replace Superman. They mixed his DNA with some of one of the scientists, and...Kon was born. Except he got out early and...long story short...here he is."

"So, half alien, half human, then? What's this 'get out early

Bad mother for not knowing a thing about who your daughter goes and risks her life with...

"I don't remember the details exactly...we were still part of Young Justice when he told me, and I was too busy drooling over...yeah..." She bites her lip for a moment. "They were trying to make him into a full grown Superman, but somehow he got out and they got a really cocky, know-it-all Superboy instead. Any more than that. you'd really need to talk to his family. Which is still on. Right?"

She clearly teasing. "Oooooohhhh, I don't know...Cocky and know-it-all? Why is he around my daughter?"

Cassie turns bright red. "Mom!!! He's not like that any more! Since he can, you know, age now and not be sixteen forever he's...grown up. A lot."

Stop. Rewind.

"Wait. Wait. Before recently he couldn't age, but they were trying to make a grown up Superman and failed, so the aging thing was part of that?"

She going to hold off on the "so you're the older woman," joke. It was tempting, but...she's really worked up about this.

"They were aging him...and when he suddenly got out, the aging process stunted. And he was sixteen for awhile. But...I don't know what changed, exactly, but now he's growing and his powers are developing and...Mom? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Because, honey..." She says slowly. "While I do have Amazons over for tea once and awhile and met a very nice God in Greece to help make you, this world...takes some getting used to when I'm faced with it. Give me a little time to wrap my mind around it."

Cassie raises an eyebrow. Her words do not match the amused expression in her Mom's eyes, but Cassie is certain she doesn't want to know.

Her mom's idea of humor frightens her sometimes.

"So...it's a definite yes, then?" she asks, hopefully.

"It's a definite, 'yes.'" She smiles. "But Superman or not, 18 or not, you're my little girl and he better be good to you, sweetheart."

"So...tell me about this plan..."
