Cassie Sandsmark paces around her living room, nervous. She’s got her latest History paper clutched in her hand, with a broad A+ written across the top, and she’s practicing her best Mommy-I-love-you smile. The last time she’d had one of those plastered on her face, she’d asked her mom to let her get her belly button pierced. That time, she’d been ( Read more... )

Mom is home, thank the Gods and, after a day of a quarter of her grad students turning in major papers late, the print shop at the college being in need of repairs, and the computer lab crashing (both of which prevent her from weeding out the honestly frustrated from the generally lazy), and just everyone having that kind of day all at once, Helena has had enough interesting surprises to last a week.

She immediately goes for a glass of wine and the jazz station.

"Cassandra, honey, do you mind being on dinner detail this evening? I don't care what so long as it doesn't bite back."

Cassie stops. Dinner.

But...but...she made tea. And cookies.

Cassie intercepts her Mom, wrenching the glass of wine from her Mom's hand.

"I can totally do dinner. Maybe something Italian? Or Mexican?" Truth is, she'll probably pick up the phone and order pseudo-Greek food from Daphne's, but Mom doesn't really need to know that at this point. "I made tea. And cookies. I thought you might, you know, like to relax after a really long day, and hey, what better way to do it than tea and cookies?" She flashes her mom a bright smile. "Timeweek said that wine isn't quite the best relaxing agent on a weekday."

"Okay, Cassie, if you failed the History Exam I promise not to be too mad, but we are going to have to talk about getting some study time in."

A beat.

She sets the glass of wine down and pulls the rolled up paper out from the back pocket that she'd stuffed it in, flashing it in front of her Mom's eyes. "I really don't think this counts as failing," she says with a sunny grin.

Helena brighten. Ah the clouds have not entirely dampened this day.

"This is great!" she says, enveloping her daughter in a hug. "I'm so proud of you!"

A beat.

"So why are you looking like I'm going to ground you until doomsday?" Convinced? Nope. Not even the God of Thieves can lie to his mother. Why should she be able to?

"Right. About that..."

Cassie sighs and goes to the stove, pouring some tea into two cups. She makes her mother's tea the way she likes it, and pours a large cup of tea for herself, loading it up with honey. She brings the cups to either side of the plate of cookies and takes a seat on one end, glancing up at her Mom.

"Maybe you should sit down?"

"Cassandra Persephone Sandsmark..."

She has that look.

Oh gods. Oh gods, oh gods, oh gods.... She used the middle name!

"Look, Mom, it's not a bad thing, what I'm about to tell you. I'm not, like, becoming Ares' consort or anything. And no, I'm not asking for a tattoo either. But...this is about a boy..." She doesn't dare look into her mother's eyes, instead staring at the plate of cookies, her cheeks turning red.

"Uh, huh..."

Hard to gage her mood from the tone.

"Donna knows him."

Bright smile.

Bright happy smile.

"This the same one Diana threw into the bay a few years back or another boy from the team?"

Because Cassie goes to a girl's school and has very little time on her hands these days to meet other boys.

"Superboy. The same one that, Diana, uhh, threw." Cassie's face grows bright red. "But she didn't throw him because we were kissing or anything. Well, we were kissing, but that's not why she threw him. The reason she threw him was unrelated. Really."

Crashing and burning?

Cassie?

Nooooo.

Hera? Send a monster now. Really. Please? Any monster you'd like.

She tries so very, very hard to keep the "stern mom," thing going - but she was young once and adventurous. Otherwise, Cassandra wouldn't be a thought. Her daughter though may or may not pick up on the amusement in her eyes while the rest of her relays -

"Start from the beginning. Go forward."

"The...beginning of our relationship? Or the beginning of...what I'm about to ask you?" Cassie lifts an eyebrow at her Mom, befuddled. "Throw me a line here, Mom, I'm sinking."

She loses it. She laughs and sits down in the chair.

"Okay, you and Kon. I know there's been the crush thing for awhile and adventures and you guys weren't going to the club you guys have for awhile." She takes the tea. "Safe to assume things are back on?"

"Yeah. Things were...weird...for awhile. But things are better now." She smiles. "And...we've been talking. And thinking. And talking. And we sort of...want to take things to the next level."
