"Oh, you know," he said, shoving his hands in his pockets, shrugging, "Did cousin Clark have problems with sciences? 'Cause I'm wondering if it's a genetic thing."

"I think his major trouble was with civics. He and the teacher didn't get on. Science was so-so." She drops another batter coated bit of heaven into the iron skillet. Growing boys of Connor's type eat a whole lot. "Worried about your test again?"

"Not so much," he said, shaking his head, "Got a little study time in on the internet with Tim. He's tons better at that stuff than I am, plus he knows all these little tricks to help me remember it all. No, there was something else I wanted to talk to you about. About my, uhm, well...it's about a girl, Aunt Martha."

"Probably not," she says casually. "But I am family. I have to ask, you understand. But you are thinking about it, with this girl?"

"Well..." she trails off. "You are 18, so I can't tell you not to, but I do hope -" She sighs and then smiles a very large smile. "You love her?"

"I really do," he said, catching himself smiling the wide, loopy smile of a teenager in love. "Yeah, I really do."
