Runnin' a tight ship.

Kilowog's finding his patience running extremely thin, the longer these negotiations wear on. Concentrating this many Lanterns in one spot had to be done, but dammit if it doesn't leave them undermanned everyhere else. Pressing rookies into the line of duty before he's done whippin' 'em into shape. Never a good sign ( Read more... )

He does not leave easily, but he's leaving.

Wings folded back, fists clenched, wishing he still carried a gun so he might shoot something.

"They'll beat you every time."

Zal doesn't even look up.

"Seven hells, they will..."

"You keep trying to beat them on their terms, they will."

"Right. And what do you know of Thanagarian honor, you - "

His head turns, and he stops cold.

"You... who are you?"

His lips tighten. It's been long enough for him to have fallen out of memory.

"I am Katar Hol."

Slowly, Zal's jaw starts to drop.

"Impossible. The man is dead."

His gaze does not waver.

"Was."

His eyes believe, but his words do not.

"Katar Hol. Returned from the seventh hell. You expect me to believe this?"

His head starts to shake.

"If you're Katar Hol, than where is - "

The other, equally infamous Hawk is, in fact, not far behind. And as usual, she gives no thought to the fact that she's interrupting as she arrives.

"Looks like Killowog's got the situation..."

Trailing off for a minute, taking in Zal. It's a little odd to see a Thanagarian in that particular colour.

"In hand," she finishes. "Little thanks to Kid Lantern here. Word of advice, boy, generals like that guy tend to get even more aggressive when their manhood is called into question."

His head bows, to disguise his slight smile.

"Shayera Thal, Koltor Zal."

Zal's eyes shift between the two of them. His expression having passed the surprise and starting the face into something less readable.

It takes him a moment to try and respond.

"People like that only respond to direct confrontation. You can't let them push you around."

"It is possible to stand your ground without openly baiting people," Shayera responds. "And I can't believe I just said that."

Baiting people is second nature to her. She understands the impulse to push people, to test them.

She's doing it now, to a certain extent. Curious as to what exactly to make of a rookie Green Lantern from Thanagar... and as to what he makes of them.

He suppresses a smirk at hearing Shayera admit that, but she'll know what he thought anyway.

"We speak from experience, Zal." A glance down the hallway toward the Hawkship dock, although the two of them are still silhouetted well enough to obscure who they are to anyone else looking at them.

"Much experience."

Zal's face remains stoic.

Rather than address their points, his eyes narrow slighly.

"Where have you been? Have you abandoned your home while Thanagar fights for its very soul?"

Shayera's own eyes narrow in return.

"Being a wanted fugitive makes it a little hard to stick around," she says, snippishly. "When that's the reward you get for years of trying to change things on our homeworld for the better, you see how eager you are to keep coming back for more."
