I haven't been to a Usenix event since ... 2000 back in Nola for LISA. I haven't been to a hardcore security event in ... I can't remember. But wow, I would have loved to have attended this keynote.

In this case, the CPU cooling sort. After a year of putting up with a noisy cpu fan in my work laptop, I finally called up for a replacement and took care of it yesterday. Expected results occur - quieter fan.

Unexpected results?

1) CPU stays cooler. 10-20F cooler.
2) Battery lasts longer. Like 2x as long.

Those noisy fans? Replace them.

First, I buy a bunch of Alienware systems at work so that we can put them into the server room, headless, running Linux.

Now, I'm considering buying a couple of HP Blackbird 002 systems for the exact same thing.

I can hear the screaming already from PC gamer geeks.

Remember those machines I purchased to support the crazy ass nVidia graphics cards that we are using as computational engines, not (and I can hear the screams of thousands of hardcore gamers) for actual gaming ( Read more... )

used to be that if you were doing scientific computing, say simulating a protein folding, or some physical system, you got yourself a Cray or some other supercomputer. If you wanted something to show you that simulation in a pretty picture, you got yourself an SGI "reality engine ( Read more... )
